Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United's attackers to express themselves next season

Wayne Rooney revealed Jose Mourinho expects Manchester United to quickly break their attacking shackles.

The United captain celebrated 12 years at Old Trafford with a testimonial against boyhood club Everton on Wednesday night, although the game finished goalless.

Rooney insisted Mourinho is demanding they express themselves going forward during training sessions after a turgid season last year.

‘One of the big messages he's getting across to the forward players is go and play,’ Rooney said. ‘If I end up on the left as a centre forward that's fine as long as you if lose the ball you get back into position.

‘We were disappointed the game was cancelled in China as we'd have got more minutes on the pitch. It was a decent performance at times (against Everton) and we could have scored a couple of goals.’

Zlatan Ibrahimovic had the best opportunities, twice firing straight at Maarten Stekelenburg when found by Rooney.

They go into Sunday’s Community Shield with a close to fully fit squad, with Chris Smalling’s minor foot injury making him the only doubt, although the central defender could be named on the bench.

Rooney lifted the lid on Mourinho’s style at Carrington, claiming his approach has so far been soft with the United team.

‘He obviously gets his message across that he wants to win but he's not a real big shouter,’ Rooney added.

‘He expects a lot of things from his players and just from him talking he's got that aura where you know what he wants.

‘At the moment he's not shouting - you never know when the season starts, but he's a winner.

‘He wants to win, he wanted to win tonight. He reiterated that at half time. It's a game where you're playing for Manchester United and whether it's a friendly or not you want to win.

‘Unfortunately we couldn't do that tonight but hopefully it's a game me and my family can remember.’
