Michael Carrick signs new one-year contract with Manchester United

Michael Carrick has signed a new one-year deal with Manchester United, according to club legend Paddy Crerand.

The midfielder is out of contract at Old Trafford and was believed to be waiting to find out if he would be offered a new deal.

But on Tuesday, Crerand - who won the European Cup and made over 300 appearances for the club between 1963 and 1971 - seemed to inadvertently let slip that an agreement has already been reached between the player and United.

The 77-year-old was speaking to MUTV presenter Mark Sullivan on 'The Paddy Crerand Show' and said: 'You know something as well which happened today that nobody has mentioned? And I’m delighted he has signed another contract: Michael Carrick. He’s signed a contract for another year hasn’t he?'

The camera then cut to a bemused Sullivan who said: 'Well, we’ve not had an official word on that yet, so…'

Following the dismissal of Louis van Gaal after United's FA Cup win, Carrick will be playing under new boss Jose Mourinho if he remains with the club.

The 34-year-old is keen to stay with the Red Devils and told Sky Sports News HQ on Monday: 'I’m hopeful (of staying). There’s no news as yet but we’ll have to wait and see what happens next week,' he added.

'I haven’t got a timescale on it to be honest. This week has been a bit crazy with the new manager so I’ve come away to get away from it. We’ll take it up next week.'

Arsenal, Everton, former side West Ham and hometown club Newcastle had all taken an interest in Carrick.

Meanwhile, Carrick - who was at the Monaco Grand Prix this week - has welcomed Mourinho's arrival at the Theatre of Dreams and is confident the 'Special One' will help take United back to the top.

'His track record speaks for itself,' he said. 'I think it’s a good fit. It’s about winning at the end of the day.

'I know there’s a lot of talk about styles and playing this way or that way. But it’s about winning, it’s about being No 1.

'It’s about winning trophies and if we can do that with a bit of style and a bit of flair then obviously that’s the perfect match. But first and foremost it’s about winning and getting back on top.'
