Depay may have to leave Manchester United in order to resurrect his career

Memphis Depay's former PSV Eindhoven boss Dick Advocaat believes the Holland winger may have to leave Manchester United to resurrect his flagging career elsewhere.

Depay fell out of favour with Louis van Gaal last season after joining United from PSV for £25million and has started just one game under Jose Mourinho – the EFL Cup tie at Northampton when he was replaced 10 minutes after half-time.

The 22-year-old's other six appearances this season have come off the bench as he struggles to convince Mourinho that he is worthy of a place ahead of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.

Depay has not travelled with the rest of the United squad for Thursday's Europa League clash with Advocaat's Fenerbahce side in Istanbul.

And the veteran coach, who gave Depay his full debut for PSV against Napoli in this competition in December 2012, believes the winger's future may lie away from United.

'The potential is there for him to be a good player,' said Advocaat. 'You cannot lose that, he has the quality to be a top player.

'But the problem is for him is that there are so many quality players in that squad, so for himself it is important to start playing regularly at the age he is at.

'Otherwise, the way I think is that maybe he has to find another solution because he is too good to sit on the bench.

'I still believe in him. He has the right mentality, the right character to play for United, but there are so many options there. Regular playing time will help his progression.'
