Manchester United players will be getting the full package with Jose Mourinho , insists former Real Madrid and Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek.
United have agreed a deal to bring in the Portuguese boss as Louis can Gaal's replacement - and he has been hailed a great strategist, master tactician, disciplinarian and a great leader.
Dudek spent three of his four years at Real Madrid playing deputy to Iker Casillas under Mourinho's management, report the Manchester Evening News.
“I quickly learned that Jose Mourinho was a brilliant strategist. He not only told us how to play tactically, he told us how games would turn out,” said Dudek in his autobiography.
“I remember his team-talk before an away game early in the season: 'Gentlemen, this team are dangerous at home. If you start slowly, they will score. 1-0. A quarter of the game gone. It will make you nervous. Maybe you’ll score. 1-1. But they can score again. 2-1. And if that happens you will be coming off.' He pointed at one of the players as he said this.
'But, we start aggressive? We score. 1-0. They must attack. We have the best counter-attack in the world. We score again. 2-0. Then we protect the result.' We started well and won.”
United players will discover they will pay the price if they don't buy into Mourinho's ways.
“Disciplining players is a crucial part of being a manager and we found out how Jose Mourinho goes about it following a 0-0 draw away to Levante,” added Dudek.
“Pedro León, a right winger, arrived at Real Madrid from Getafe €10 million and thought he was a superstar, but he didn’t go straight into the team. This annoyed him and he was on the bench at Levante.
“We were drawing 0-0 and Mourinho asked him to warm up, but rather than do so properly he simply stood by the corner flag and did a few stretches. I was sitting on the bench near Mourinho and he spotted this. He was fuming: “Look at his lack of effort. And then he gets offended when I tell him he’s not buckling down...'
"He put León on for Angel di Maria for the final half-hour but when he twice had perfect opportunities to put crosses in he failed to deliver them and we drew 0-0.”
Mourinho tore into León in the Real dressing room.
Dudek recalls Mourinho saying: "You are unprofessional. You think you’re cheating me? No. You’re cheating your team-mates. I saw your warm-up. You couldn’t care less about it, but I put you on. Two balls you had to deliver. Two balls for the strikers to put into an empty net. But you were not prepared. Do you care about playing for Real Madrid? Everyone has their five minutes here. You’ve had yours.
“The following day we had training ahead of a Champions League tie away to Auxerre. León thought he would play, but Mourinho called us all into the middle of the pitch and singled him out: 'I’m really sorry that you’re not interested in playing for Real Madrid. Really sorry. Others would sacrifice everything to wear the shirt. But you’re not interested.'
"He turned to a young winger who was training with us by the name of Juan Carlos.
'How old are you?'
'Nineteen.'
'Do you want to play for Real?'
'Yes.'
'When I ask you to warm up will you show full commitment?'
'I will.'
'Good. You’re on the bench on Tuesday night.'
"Then he turned back to Pedro León: 'You will watch it at home on TV. I need people who will die for Real Madrid . Enjoy watching the Champions League on television.'
"We understood that there were no half-measures with Mourinho. He made an example of León in front of us all to make us aware that if we didn’t put the effort in there would be no hiding place.”
