Monchi could quit Europa League champions

Sevilla's miracle-working Sporting Director Monchi is seriously considering quitting the club and moving to England.

Both Tottenham and Liverpool have gone after Spain’s 'Mr Moneyball' in the past and Manchester United have also been linked.

The 47-year-old has led Sevilla to nine trophies in ten years and made a €200m (£152m) profit in the transfer market.

Monchi - real name: Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo - said that although he spent six months in England in the 2013-14 season it was to learn English and so improve his ability to manage affairs at Sevilla and not a precursor to a move to the Premier League.

However, after a fall-out over the last 24-hours with high-ranking club officials he cancelled a club TV appearance on Sunday night and an interview planned for Tuesday morning.

One source in Sevilla even claimed the former Sevilla goalkeeper had already informed the club he was leaving.

The Europa League holders will be desperate for him to change his mind after he has guided them through an unprecedented period of success but their were fears in Seville on Monday night that the architect of so much of their success was finally on the brink of a move to England.

While Monchi has helped Sevilla recoup millions in player sales he insists the club must win trophies to be deemed a success.

‘No one takes a “what great economic results” banner to the stadium,’ he told Sportsmail. ‘It has to be about the glory of winning.’

Explaining how Sevilla stay ahead of their rivals, he said: ‘The first five months of the season we watch an incredible amount of football but with no particular criteria.

'There are 16 scouts and each concentrates on his league and every month comes up with an ideal XI. In December, with all the accumulated information, we start to look at the players who made the ideal XI month after month. We end up with around 700 names.

‘We now all forget our own leagues and focus on the players. We watch them five or six times each under different circumstances - home, away, international. And then from the first of May we do another ideal XI with around 20 players for each position.
