Paddy McNair has revealed that he narrowly avoided sending Jose Mourinho a rude message after receiving a text from the new Manchester United manager wishing him well for Euro 2016.
McNair, who will be part of the Northern Ireland squad to face Poland in Nice on Sunday, was grateful that United warned him Mourinho would be texting the players because otherwise he would have thought it was his friends from home playing a prank.
'It was nice of him to send that,' said McNair. 'I did reply by saying I was looking forward to playing in the tournament and to working under him.
'Luckily, the club had sent all the players an e mail beforehand telling us he was going to text us.
'I know plenty of people back in Ballyclare who would have thought nothing of winding me up, then Jose might have got a reply he wasn't expecting!'
McNair also discovered that Sir Alex Ferguson will be watching Northern Ireland in the Stade de Nice after bumping into the former United boss in a hotel lift following last month's FA Cup final.
He added: 'It was a chance meeting he was standing there with his wife. It's good and hopefully he will have a Northern Ireland scarf around his neck.'
