Juan Mata wants to fight for his place at Manchester United despite interest from Everton.
The 28-year-old wants to return to pre-season training and start afresh after the disappointment of missing out on Euro 2016 with Spain.
Nouveau riche Everton are already the bookmakers' favourites to sign Mata. Manager Ronald Koeman worked with a young Mata while manager at Valencia and was credited with setting the young playmaker on his successful career path.
United manager Jose Mourinho sold Mata for £37.1million while at Chelsea, where he was twice player of the year.
Mourinho has already moved to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan who had his medical at Carrington on Monday and that has increased the pressure on Mata to stake a claim for a first team place. Yet he is willing to try if Mourinho gives him a fair chance.
United are continuing to improve their attacking options but will consider offers for some of their squad as the pre-season take shape.
Barcelona were reportedly interested in bringing Mata back to his homeland.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca have stepped up their interest in the 28-year-old former Valencia star in their quest for European glory next season.
Barcelona are looking to strengthen their attacking ranks despite boasting the impressive trident of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.
The Spanish giants completed the domestic double this season but were disappointed to exit the Champions League in the quarter-finals.
