Am I excited to see Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the Premier League next season? Absolutely - but I can’t help but wish he had come here five years earlier.
I am sure United will get a good year or two out of him, but it’s a sad indication of the pulling power of our league that we won’t see him at his prime. Instead of signing a world-class 24-year-old like Neymar, they are bringing in someone 10 years older.
Having said that, there’s no doubt he will be box office - particularly alongside Jose Mourinho. There won’t be enough column inches for the pair of them!
With an enormous personality and a physique to match, Ibrahimovic won’t be bullied the way some players have been over here.
He’s also got sublime technique and an absolutely booming shot. I can see him scoring plenty of screamers from distance.
There is concern among United fans about Mourinho’s apparent disregard for bringing through the next generation from youth teams, and that may be exacerbated by a signing like this. What does it mean for someone like Marcus Rashford, for example?
However, if there’s one thing the Old Trafford faithful do love it’s a big character - a talisman. Just look how popular Eric Cantona was.
United fans are desperate to get back to the top at the moment and Ibrahimovic has the broad shoulders to carry that burden.
He was never really appreciated by us before netting four against England in 2012. ‘He never scores against English teams,’ we said.
He certainly will next season.
